Animation Studios & Technical Store

Animation Studios & Film Technical Store

In early 2020, Hatz delivered Stage 1 of a two-stage refurbishment project for the School of Film & Television (FTV).
Located on the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) Southbank campus, the refurbishment spanned across two levels.
It included the upgrade of a tired Film Technical Equipment Store and the renovation of two existing Animation studios. Those studios also included a model making area and a kitchenette.

Film Technical Store

The existing Store housed numerous filming equipment for student/staff loan and was the place where staff maintained faulty equipment.
When designing for the upgrade, Hatz worked closely with the stakeholders. The aim was to design storage cages that were both practical and highly secure.
It was also critically important to create an ergonomic maintenance environment for the staff technicians. Hatz also worked closely with the engineer consultancy team to ensure that adequate cooling and electrical power was provided.

Animation Studios

For the Animation studios and kitchenette, Hatz understood that FTV students study through long days of 8-14 hours.
The studio layout designed was optimised to accommodate the maximum number of students.
At the same time, the layout still provided large and ergonomic study tables for comfortable use.
The kitchenette design included a tea-making sink and a paint-wash sink and was extended to accommodate a model making bench and storage.

While the function of the Technical Equipment Store and the Animation studios varied vastly, Hatz were able to deliver the spaces cohesively by working closely with the stakeholders, builder and engineer consultancy teams.

Stage 2 of this project is scheduled for 2021 and includes a new VR and motion capture studio and a further teaching studio.
