Frequently Asked Questions
01. How do I know my project is in good hands?
Because your success defines ours. That is the whole point of the practice, not a service promise. It shows up in measurable ways: our documentation quality, with low error rates and minimal construction variations, directly protects your fixed budget. But it goes further than process. We work to understand your mission so deeply that we can advocate for outcomes you haven't yet found the words to ask for.
02. Will HATZ push the design, or just keep it safe?
Both ambition and resolution, always. We don't accept innovation without resolution, or functionality without inspiration. The tension between the two isn't a problem to manage. It is where our best work lives. That discipline produces architecture neither constraint alone could generate: spaces that surprise and endure, that move people and perform.
03. Why won't HATZ just give me the quickest, cheapest option?
Because great architecture is never accidental. It is the product of relentless interrogation and refusing the comfortable answer in favour of the right one. We invest the time to find the third solution that satisfies both innovation and resolution and we never accept "good enough." When we do, we don't just disappoint a client; we diminish the discipline we've chosen.
04. Our ageing campus buildings no longer meet contemporary teaching, research or accessibility needs. Where does HATZ fit?
This is the work we do best. Our core expertise in tertiary education is adaptive reuse: refurbishing, upgrading and repurposing existing campus buildings to meet the standards contemporary learning and research demand. This isn't renovation. It is the art of honouring what a building has been while unlocking everything it can become. And every DDA-compliance upgrade is an opportunity to transform how your institution welcomes everyone who walks through its doors.
05. We're developing a rehabilitation clinic. How does HATZ approach designing spaces for recovery?
In health, architecture isn't decoration. It is clinical infrastructure. Rehabilitation environments designed around therapeutic goals support recovery and the configuration of a clinic shapes patient experience and staff efficiency in measurable, observable ways. We design so that every decision, from natural light to circulation logic to material selection, serves both clinical and human outcomes. This is a sector where the difference shows and our clients here know it.
06. We're building our forever home. What's it like to work with HATZ on something this personal?
Your home is the most consequential building we could design, because you'll live with every decision we make. There is nowhere to hide in residential work and we'd have it no other way. The architecture must be both bold and deeply resolved: conceptually ambitious yet practically flawless, distinctive yet profoundly liveable, from the spatial sequence to the materials to how light moves through each room.
07. Is HATZ a registered practice?
Yes. The titles "architect" and "architectural" are protected by law and may only be used by those registered with the Architects Registration Board. HATZ is registered with the Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV Reg. no. C50873), accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) and a member of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).
